Preparing your students for safe driving.
DriveFit is a comprehensive road safety intervention designed to equip Year 12 students with the essential knowledge and capabilities for safe driving. Through engaging, evidence-based lessons, students learn to recognise road hazards, make informed vehicle safety choices, manage distractions, and control fatigue and speed. DriveFit promotes proactive attitudes toward driving, ensuring students are well-prepared as responsible passengers and future drivers.
Designed for teachers.
DriveFit supports teachers to deliver impactful road safety education with minimal preparation time. The programme includes a comprehensive guide offering clear instructions and practical tips for facilitating meaningful discussions on road safety in a way that fits with best practice in PSHE. No specialist knowledge is required – each lesson plan is designed to be straightforward, using engaging activities that resonate with students.
Recognising that every classroom is unique, DriveFit provides adaptable resources to accommodate different teaching styles and student needs. Interactive elements, like group discussions and video analyses have been added to support student engagement. The approach is positive and trauma-informed, steering away from shock tactics, focusing instead on building students’ strengths and awareness. With DriveFit teachers can guide students through essential road safety topics, equipping them for informed decision-making on the roads.
Evaluated for impact.
DriveFit is not just another road safety programme. The original DriveFit programme, delivered in 2021, was rigorously evaluated and found to improve young people’s attitudes, intentions, and confidence in making safer decisions as future drivers. You can find details of the evaluation here.
DriveFit 2.0 has since been redesigned to support teacher-led delivery within schools and colleges, making it easier to embed within the curriculum. The updated programme has now been evaluated through a trial conducted across four post-16 settings in Surrey in partnership with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.
The evaluation found that DriveFit 2.0 is feasible to deliver in the classroom and well received by students, with lessons rated as credible, useful, and engaging. While short-term changes in attitudes and intentions were limited, the study found a small but significant increase in students’ awareness of driving risks, particularly among groups that can be harder to reach through traditional road safety education. You can read the full evaluation report and key findings here.
Developed in partnership.
DriveFit has been developed through collaboration with organisations working across road safety, education, and emergency services sectors.
The programme was funded by the Road Safety Trust, delivered by the RAC Foundation, and supported by the National Fire Chiefs Council, National Police Chiefs Council, Road Safety GB, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. This partnership has helped ensure that DriveFit reflects current road safety priorities and provides schools and colleges with a practical, evidence-informed programme to support pre-driver education.
Deliver DriveFit in your setting.
DriveFit has been designed to fit within your school's PSHE curriculum for students aged 16-18. The programme includes three interactive lessons, each lasting 45-60 minutes, which include engaging activities, discussions, and video analyses. Comprehensive teacher guidance, lesson plans, and digital resources are provided to facilitate delivery.
Ideal for PSHE or alternative curriculum days, the programme can accommodate groups of around 30 students. All materials, including PowerPoint slides, task print-outs, and assessment grids are provided. The lessons use a strength-based, trauma-informed approach, focusing on building students’ skills and knowledge without resorting to shock tactics.
